Attitudes to Faith — The Individual facing God. Sela!

Otl Aicher was a religious person and one who never ceased seeking. He took his Catholic faith seriously, as is also to be inferred from his critical pronouncements on the Catholic Church. It was important for him that faith be authentically lived out.

We live in an age in which individual self-determination seems to have become the measure of all things. And yet people are constantly searching for meaning in their lives and for experiences of a spiritual nature. Even in our enlightened, secular age, people are just as much driven by a yearning for hope and orientation as they ever were.

We would like to motivate people to become both more contemplative and more active with our “Sela” project. Sela is a non-confessional object that was conceived for use by everyone.

Liberated from external influences and constraints, the individual is able to find a way through to themselves and to God. The furniture is fashioned so as to enable its occupant to retain a natural, unforced posture when praying. A person’s body can be positioned to accord with how they feel.

Our consecrated space is screened off from the outside world. The open cupola offers a view of the sky and horizon. It needs to be asked whether faith can be reduced to profane rituals and customs. What happens when an individual faces God? What do you think? Sela!
