Reconceived Classics: FSB 1267

Door handle by Hartmut Weise after designs by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe

29.03.2022

FSB designer Hartmut Weise marked the centenary of the Bau-haus in 2019 by re-interpreting two door levers by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, one-time Bauhaus Director, and merging them into a single new product: FSB 1267. Mies van der Rohe devised vari-ous lever handles for his building ventures – including those in architectural bronze for Lemke House in Berlin-Hohenschönhausen and the sturdy aluminium door handles in his New National Gallery, likewise in Berlin. Hartmut Weise stuck to the original blueprints for these products when re-designing them. The upshot is a compelling fusion of the two models that unmistakeably pays tribute to Ludwig Mies van der Rohe.

Ludwig Mies van der Rohe’s historic door levers testify to his deep grasp of form and materiality. “Mies was well aware of the close link between a material and the patina it acquires with use”, Hartmut Weise explains, “and he knew exactly which stylistic means to adopt in order that, rather than losing their looks through use and the wearing of edges by hands, his models actually become steadily more ‘appealing’ if anything”. Weise paid quite a bit of thought to the haptics of taking hold of a handle and its ergonomic functions whilst developing his own version. The new FSB 1267 model retains the fluid transition from circular neck to flat grip that informed the original designs by Mies van der Rohe.

FSB 1267 has been engineered to comply with the latest specifications and standards governing the construction of buildings. The new lever handle comes in versions for flush, narrow-frame and glazed doors as well as in one for emergency exit devices pursuant to DIN EN 179. The product collection additionally includes a window handle and plug-in handles with slimline roses for doors and windows. FSB 1267 is available in Aluminium, Stainless Steel and Bronze.

The FSB 1267 collection sees the advent of a “reconceived classic” whose stylistic and formal vocabulary, whilst proudly reflecting its ori-gins, has, through the fusion of two historic Mies van der Rohe prototy-pes, nevertheless yielded a product that is utterly new.
