Otl Aicher was also a political person, and much of his work has a political dimension. His convictions in this respect centred upon the free individual. He had an extremely critical stance towards all state organisations: he viewed the state as the free citizen’s enemy. Though Aicher’s attitude to, and perception of, the state are understandable given his experiences during the National Socialist period, they are nevertheless somewhat problematic.

Otl Aicher would presumably have consented to the demand that each and every citizen should develop their own way of thinking, reflect upon their perception of the state, and give some thought to the issue of democracy. A mobile democracy workshop was set up on the basis of this notion.

The interactive exhibition is intended to reach a large number of people and act as a stimulus to their addressing the issues of co-determination, basic rights, history and politics in greater depth.
