FSB 1230 and 1231

for the newly designed M9 Museum Mestre in Italy

For several years now, Mestre, the area of Venice built on dry land, has been evolving into a special highlight before the gates of the historic lagoon city in an exciting process of “urban regeneration”. The Museum M9 building designed by the celebrated Berlin-based architects’ practice Sauerbruch Hutton, for instance, was opened in 2019 as part of a campaign to upgrade the region. When it came to selecting a lever handle, the architects opted for a design they had authored themselves, the FSB 1230 and 1231 series of models, which harmonise to perfection with the architecture and colour scheme in the imposing ensemble.

“The central image underpinning our blueprint for the M9, ” the architects themselves suggest, “is the traditional Italian town with its squares, streets and alleys – and the way a lot of life there tends to be spent out in the open. ” With the objective of gifting the city a vibrant centre, Sauerbruch Hutton devised a new quarter comprising a new-build museum and a restored and revitalised convent from the late-16th century. The museum’s façade incorporates glazed ceramic panels in 17 polychromatic nuances, echoing the traditional use of colours ranging from dark oxide red through ochre to light sandy shades in the buildings of Venice.

Architect duo Matthias Sauerbruch and Louisa Hutton custom-conceived the FSB 1230 and FSB 1231 product series for the German heritage company from Brakel, including door levers that harmoniously blend in with the new M9 museum’s overall design. The product collection is distinguished by a grip of fine-lined, multiply-curved shape that veritably presents its services to the user. A black anodised micro-blasted finish makes for a particularly pleasant haptic quality. Panic crossbar fittings by FSB have also been installed in Mestre alongside handles for doors and windows.
