The stuff of which handles are made

Metal or non-metal, that is the question.

A question that we already answered 125 years ago: FSB products are only available in metals such as aluminium, AluGrey, stainless steel, bronze or brass. Which is also a tradition of the fittings industry that, after all, has developed from the ancient guilds of blacksmiths and locksmiths.

This does not mean, however, that door handles could not be made from other materials as well. At the beginning of the last century, metal handles with ebony, horn or rubber inserts came on the market. Later on, the first fittings incorporating synthetic materials were developed. However, these disappeared again without leaving a trace, as happened to the black thermoset material from the 1950s.

The problem was that such plastic materials obviously could not withstand the relatively high strain to which door handles are subjected. This only changed towards the end of the 1960s, when nylon door handles entered the market, being the first to compete seriously with their metal counterparts. Yet even these plastic handles cannot completely dispense with a solid metal core inside.

However that may be, there are several good reasons why FSB has opted for metal. The materials our door handles are made of are presented to you on the next pages.
