In 1997, FSB invited six world-famous architects to come to Berlin, together with several philosophers and artists. The task was: "Build us a virtual house". The architects were forbidden to resort to wigwams, log cabins, Victorian facades, glass pavilions or other requisites from the past. They were asked to derive their ideas from Popper’s in-between world, where the creative sensitivity of human beings is located, together with their dreams and secret desires. Peter Eisenman, Jacques Herzog, Toyo Ito, Daniel Libeskind, Jean Nouvel and Alejandro Zaera-Polo took up the challenge.
One of the virtual houses created in this workshop has actually been built in the meantime. Daniel Libeskind translated his entry for the contest into a tangible gallery, the Aedes Architectural Gallery by Barbara Weil, which can be admired either on Majorca or in the Internet under www.studioweil.com
