The Door Handle Chaos

Narrative and pictures by Klaus Imbeck
Published in 1994 by: Verlag der Buchhandlung Walther König, Cologne

Volume 9 of the FSB Edition was written parallel to our efforts to become one of the pioneers venturing into the digital world of the Internet at the beginning of the 1990s. Then, our company made the bold decision not only to invest generously in digitising the operations of the entire firm, but also to furnish tangible evidence that a new age had begun.

The graduate graphic artist and self-taught computer freak Klaus Imbeck, who had drawn FSB’s attention to himself by some illustrated narratives in the FAZ magazine, was chosen as our guide to this world. FSB asked him whether he could imagine translating some interesting episodes from the analogue world of commonplace door handles to the digital world of cyberspace and its prevailing atmosphere. Klaus Imbeck could – and from then on delivered his fantastic comic stories about the door handle chaos in cyberspace page by page, week by week, for several months. The computer programming was so perfect that they could be transferred via floppy disk directly to the printing presses of Druckerei Schreckhase in Spangenberg, a printing house that we also found receptive towards any kind of progressive media.
