It was primarily the wish to fit his buildings with hardware that articulates and, indeed, augments the philosophy underpinning his architectural practice that led David Chipperfield to author handles of his own.
Notwithstanding the plethora of products already on the market, it has been shown that the above aim can only be put to effect by designing a handle of one’s own that can be used in both residential and “project” schemes. Chipperfield’s design for FSB is informed by the precursors of Modernism as well as by the philosophy of one Ludwig Wittgenstein, and champions the same logical clarity.
Today’s building regulations have made designing harder, most notably because a versatile handle range needs to contain variations on the basic form (models with returns or cranked sections, for instance) if it is to find application in major projects or on frame doors. FSB 1004 draws on a clean-lined formal concept that meets all functional requirements and in this way lends expression to the underlying philosophy in private and public spheres alike. The collection can be specified for both residential and “project” schemes due to its comprising commonly marketed mechanical parts and conforming to the relevant building and safety standards. The door levers are supplied with AGL® heavy-duty bearings, in a fire-safety variant, and with standard bearings respectively. Rounding off the collection are a frame door handle with or without a cranked section and a window handle – in combination with a straight-cornered rose. Models can be supplied in either Aluminium, Stainless Steel or Bronze.
